What's in Your Genes?
NCJWC was instrumental in raising awareness in communities across the country for testing for Jewish genetic diseases. We are fortunate to have Dr. Cheryl Rockman-Greenberg geneticist in Winnipeg, as a resource for important updates on Jewish Genetic Disorders.
A collaborative initiative of NCJWC–Toronto Section, the Department of Prenatal Diagnosis and Medical Genetics at Mount Sinai Hospital, and Jacob’s Ladder resulted in The Jewish Genetic Diseases Awareness Week launched in 2012
Some inherited diseases occur when both parents unknowingly carry the same recessive genetic trait. For this reason, all couples with any Jewish ancestry are encouraged to undergo carrier screening before conception. A simple blood test can identify carrier status and help couples make informed family-planning decisions.
