Founded in 1954, the Edmonton Section established the Jewish Senior Citizens’ Centre (formerly the Golden Age Club), the first formal program serving Edmonton’s Jewish seniors. In 1963, it helped launch and fund the Norwood Head Start Program (now the Norwood Child and Family Resource Centre), supporting early childhood development for children 3- 5 years of age. In the past, the Edmonton Section successfully advocated for half-day kindergarten to be part of the educational school system.
Today, the Edmonton Section remains active in the community, supporting initiatives such as programs for children and seniors-in-need, family violence prevention (including women’s shelters), counselling services in the Jewish and general community, and awareness efforts around human trafficking, genetic disease and organ donation. Very often, Edmonton Section works in partnership with other organizations to educate people on different topics, including antisemitism, medical issues, and other topics related to women, children and families.
The Edmonton Section is proud to be affiliated with the National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, and in turn, the International Council of Jewish Women. Edmonton Section believes in the empowerment of women and providing education, service and social action at a local level, as well as assisting the other sections across the country to achieve their potential.
